332. Uncompromising Intimacy: How to Reconnect in Long-Term Relationships

Many of us were taught that compromise is the hallmark of a good relationship.

What if compromise is sometimes another way of withholding? What if, in order to avoid discomfort or keep the peace, we stop sharing what we want, need, long for, or feel—and eventually lose touch with it ourselves?

In this honest, warm, and practical conversation, Dr. Jessie Mahoney talks with Dr. Alexandra Stockwell, physician coach, relationship and intimacy coach, and author of Uncompromising Intimacy. They explore what it means to create a relationship where both people can bring more of themselves to the table.

This is not about always getting your own way. It is about awareness, self-expression, generosity, and learning how to share what is true without turning it into a report card on your partner.

Jessie and Alexandra discuss the many ways long-term relationships can get off track: unspoken resentments, the mental load, professional habits that follow us home, a lack of time and attention, libido mismatch, and the tendency to prioritize everyone else’s needs first.

They also offer practical, hopeful ways forward:

  • Begin with curiosity rather than assumption.

  • Ask an open-ended question, then listen generously.

  • Let “Are you available to hear this?” be a real question.

  • Create intimacy dates that prioritize connection without pressure.

  • Notice the small moments where you can turn toward one another.

  • Practice pleasure, not as another project, but as a way of becoming more available to life.

For physicians and high-achieving humans, relationships can easily become one more thing to manage. This episode is an invitation to pause, be present, and remember that attention and intention can create a very different kind of connection.
