335. The Problem With Never Being Satisfied: Still Practicing but Differently
“I thought I was a Kaiser lifer.”
For 22 years, Dr. Jessie Mahoney practiced pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente. She loved children, families, science, teaching, leadership, and the meaningful work of medicine. She had a bustling practice, physician-wellness leadership roles, a pension, and the promise of lifetime health insurance.
From the outside, leaving made absolutely no sense.
On the inside, Jessie had an ongoing, growing, gnawing feeling that something was off.
Jessie now knows that medicine had trained her to notice the next problem. To take the next role. To keep fixing, improving, striving, and searching for the next golden ticket. She was trained to believe rest was complacency. Satisfaction and contentment were risky.
This episode is not about how to jump ship and leave medicine or your practice. In fact, most people I work with stay in medicine. Most, in fact, stay in their jobs and learn to be satisfied.
The first steps are to listen to yourself, trust that change can be nonlinear, and consider that there are many ways to practice and live authentically.
